Tips & Advice
Basic Dog Grooming
Regular grooming is key to maintaining a dogs coat and keeping their skin healthy. It's not just about looking pretty! Grooming on a daily basis helps prevent tangles and will also help reduce the amount of shed dead hair in your home.A good basic brush to invest in is a double sided brush; one side with soft bristles, the other with cushionedstainless steel pins. If your dog has long hair, a comb with wider teeth and a 90-degree angle between teeth
and handle may also be necessary.
Start off by using your fingers to carefully loosen and matted hair from sensitive skin. Combs are a safe andcomfortable choice around the head and neck, the area surrounding the anus and base of the tail, the legs
and the lower abdomen. When using a comb, brush with the grain.
If for whatever reason you are unsure about the grooming of your dog, ask a professional groomer.
Basic Dog Bathing
Brush your dogs coat prior to bathingMake sure you have your bathing supplies ready to hand: dog shampoo (do not use human shampoo), towels, cotton balls, face cloth, dog treats. If your dog is reluctant to get in the bath have some of their favourite dog treats available and encourage them to get in. If the dog is treated during the experience it will help to making it a more pleasant experience for them. Place a cotton wool ball in each of your dog's ears to prevent water from entering the ear canal.Make sure the water is warm before washing. The best technique for bathing your dog is to start at the neck and work down towards the tail. Be careful not to get shampoo in the dog's eyes.Rub shampoo thoroughly all over the dog and then rinse off thoroughly with warm water. Dogs will shake when they are wet so be prepared when the dog gets out. Rub your dog over with the towel to get excess water off and then blow dry. Don't forget to take the cotton wool balls out of the dog's ears.
