When I started my business, Simply The Pets, 18 years ago, the industry looked nothing like it does today. It was smaller, less structured, and far less visible - and over the years I’ve watched the pet care world grow into the thriving, competitive industry it is now. During that time, I’ve seen many businesses come and go - some by choice, and others because they didn’t have the right foundations or support in place to succeed long term.

I’ve experienced the same challenges myself - the excitement of starting out and landing those first clients, the overwhelm of managing schedules and expectations, the uncertainty around what to charge, and the constant balancing act between growing your business and protecting your personal life.

Through Simply The Pets, I’ve grown from a solo start-up into a multi-staff, six-figure turnover business - and in the last year made the intentional decision to return to being a solo dog walker. Along the way, I’ve built systems, solved problems, made mistakes, and learned what truly works in the real world - not just in theory.

One thing I say often - especially now - is that loving dogs alone isn’t enough to build a successful dog walking business. Clients today expect more. To stand out and earn well, you need knowledge, professionalism, reliability, strong communication, clear processes, and ideally qualifications or specialist skills that give clients confidence and make your service the obvious choice. This is no longer just a side-hobby industry - it’s a professional service sector - and that’s actually a huge opportunity when you approach it the right way.
